WHAT IS A GUILD?
When thinking about guilds, we like to look at two sites in particular; medieval guilds and plants guild. *Structure: In medieval guilds, artisans and merchants formed structured associations to regulate their trades, set quality standards, and provide training for apprentices. Similarly, plant guilds involve grouping different plant species that complement each other’s growth and functions, creating a harmonious and efficient garden ecosystem.
*Interdependence: Medieval guild members supported each other through collective bargaining, shared resources, and shared economic interests, ensuring the stability and prosperity of the guild as a whole. In plant guilds, each plant species plays a specific role that benefits the entire group, such as nutrient production, pest control, or structural support.
*Optimization: Medieval guilds established rules and standards to ensure high-quality workmanship and fair trade practices, enhancing the reputation and efficiency of their trades. Plant guilds optimize garden space by selecting plants that thrive together, reduce waste, and maximize resource use, leading to more balanced ecosystems.
*Community: Both medieval guilds and plant guilds promote collaboration, diversity, companionship, and self-sustaining systems. Plant guilds, on the other hand, create a sustainable garden environment by mimicking natural ecosystems, promoting biodiversity, and reducing the need for external inputs like fertilizers and pesticides.
In summary, guilds exemplify how organized groups can work synergistically, leveraging the strengths of members to create more robust, efficient, and sustainable systems. Mutual support enhances the resilience and allows guild members to rely on and share with each other in times of abundance and in times of need. Memory work is no competition - as we learn to co-exist, we grow with one another.
